Birmingham Blues climbed their way to the top of the Birmingham County FA League as they had their most successful day since the heady heights of becoming National Champions. Reeling from 3 defeats from 3 in their opening fixtures they completed their 5th 1-0  success on the bounce, to head the division and put themselves in a great position to retain their title. Table topping Hartshill Strollers were their first victims, as a Shane Ward follow up from Brother Ian Ward’s parred effort opened the scoring. Player Manager Dave Norton was hitting his straps as he pulled the strings in midfield continually creating chances for Ian Ward to show great skill in holding play up. A comfortable success to gain a massive 3 points on the league leaders was their just rewards.

Coleshill Strollers were the next opponents and a great spin and shot from Ian Ward settled it, John Mcgullian making his debut with impressive touches and movement inadvertently stepping into the area gave Coleshill a life line. New signing Heath Underwood showed his class with a great penalty save and followed it up with a last minute tip over to keep the Brummies winning streak intact. In their third game Bedworth had no answer to the now fast flowing football a Dave Norton wonder strike put Birmingham in command and despite x3 shots from Ian Ward hitting the woodwork, they were unable to extend their lead that their superiority deserved.

The final game was against the Birmingham Whites who were at the time the only unbeaten team in the league with 3 wins and 4 draws. Try as they might Blues struggled to break down Simon Dyer’s well marshalled defence, until with only moment remaining Dave Norton once again produced a blistering shot which beat a perplexed Derek Hughes in the Whites goal.

After their 5th 1-0 win a row, Manager Dave Norton commented “Skip (Dave Castle) and Ade (Whitehead) gave us a great platform, that is the most solid we have looked for ages, Heath made a really solid and assured debut in goal. John made a really good start he’s on a massive learning curve, but he’s got something we can work with. The Wardy’s just give us that little bit of class, we’ve turned it around so well, we were 7 points adrift today at the start and now we are two points clear, we couldn’t have wished for it to go any better”
