BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE MATCHES - SECOND ROUND OVER 60'S

Birmingham WF traveled to a blisteringly hot Castle Vale for the second round of fixtures in the Midlands League.

The team was buoyed by the return of a specialist keeper and striker and two debutantes who fitted in well.

The first game was against old rivals Hartshill and Birmingham were pleased that Les D was back in goal as in the early minutes he touched a goal bound effort from England squad member, John Cooper on to the post.

After this the game became very cagey with neither side able to carve out any further decent chances and the game ended 0-0. The second game was against Shard End and despite having most of the play Birmingham were unable to strike a goal and missed the opportunity to win their first game when a penalty struck the post. Another 0-0.

The third game was against a lively Bedworth team and both teams cancelled each other out and the game ended 0-0.

The final game was against Coleshill with two players succumbing to injury and heat Birmingham fielded their only seven fit players. The game started badly for Birmingham when a speculative shot deflected off Frank and wrong-footed Les in goal. Birmingham pressed for most of the game and were eventually rewarded when a long shot from Frank was fumbled into the net for a deserved leveler. 1-1.

Played 7, Drew 6, Lost 1.

Thanks to all the team for their efforts in tropical conditions with Phil R, Trevor and Gus acquitting themselves well against competitive teams.

The next round is at Tamworth on June 3rd.
