SOLID BIRMINGHAM PUSH FOR TITLE - Birmingham County FA league 23/8/17

Birmingham’s over 50’s continued their long unbeaten run with two solid if not spectacular performances, with two games against Hartshill and Coleshill in the inaugural Birmingham County FA league, Dave Norton gave them the perfect start with a pin- point shot into the top corner to breakdown the Coleshill defence in the third minute. From then on Birmingham were able to relax and and settle into their passing game as Adrian Whitehead making his competitive debut for the club was giving nothing away, normally a combative midfielder he slotted in well alongside skipper David Castle in defence. His fine debut was capped with a superb strike which found the bottom corner of the Coleshill net and victory by 2-0 was complete.
Their second game against Hartshill was a fairly tight affair, whilst once again Birmingham’s keeper did not have a shot to save, chances were generally at a premium. David Castle then found himself in space from a excellent pass from David Wright and he finished with aplomb to score the only goal of the game. Birmingham now top the division and also have a game in hand on their rivals , their record of Played 5 won 4 drawn 1 with only one goal conceded meaning they could clinch the title in mid september with two further wins.
After the game Manager Paul Murtagh commented, “I thought we played some good football today without really getting out of second gear, we are adapting to new systems really well and everyone is contributing, I was really pleased for Ade making his debut, and scoring , we are developing a strong squad with good quality players . The standard of other teams is getting better and we need to make sure we stay ahead of the game, our strength in depth is going to be so important when it comes to the latter stages of the major tournaments”.
